DIAMOND D
ANGUS STORY
Leaving Great Falls, MT, you head north on I-15 to the Valier
junction, and at this point you turn west. You will find Diamond
D Angus west of Valier on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.
Here you find what is called the "Big Sky Country",
that encompasses four counties. How beautiful are the red-orange
skies of the morning and of the evening. This area is noted
for its cattle, and beautiful wheat and barley fields. In the
past few years, this area has had the drought that much of the
western United States has experienced.
Don is a third generation DeBoo in the Valier area. His grandparents
were attracted here because of the "Valier Water Irrigation
Project".
Don's father, Charles, remained on the farm. In the early years
the DeBoo's had milk cows, and in the 1940's they had beef Shorthorn
cattle. Charles started a registered herd in the 1950's making
him one of the earliest breeders of registered Angus cattle
in the area. Most of our cattle go back to that foundation herd.
Mark DeBoo and his wife Cathy, along with the
help of Mark's parents, Don and Janet, manage the ranch.
Anthony Ayers helps Mark with the day-to-day tasks varying
with the seasons of the year. We have been involved
in the registered cattle business and record keeping for over
40 years. Having had our start with commercial cattle and operating
a small feedlot along the way, we have been well
educated in all aspects of the cattle business.
Although the popular cattle nowadays have extremely
high EPD numbers, many lack efficiency for the commercial
cattleman to make a long-term profit. We have concentrated
our breeding program on efficient, low maintenance cows that
wean big calves without losing fertility. Our herd is weaning
bull calves that average 52% of their mothers' weight at weaning.
The ranch is now going to a natural feeding program, and will
be 100 percent forage fed and forage tested.
In addition to standard record keeping, we have kept records
on udder scores and temperament for many years. Selecting
for these traits yield cattle that are easy to work with and
have temperaments second to none.
The Diamond D Angus breeding season is now at a later date. The
annual bull sale will be in the fall of the year. The fall
sale will be November 8, 2007. There will be an offering
of 100 head of long yearling bulls along with 100 head of bred
females.
We enjoy visiting with cattlemen across the country and the
world. Please feel free to e-mail or call us toll free at 1-800-9-D-Angus
